Understanding texts—particularly the Qurʾān—requires identifying all factors that shape interpretation and inference. While mastery of morphology, syntax, rhetoric, and related linguistic sciences is essential for grasping textual meaning (dalālah, indication), these tools are not sufficient on their own. Interpreters inevitably engage with a broader phenomenon referred to as siyāq (context). Legal theorists, jurists, and especially Qurʾānic exegetes have long relied on siyāq to derive diverse meanings from scriptural passages and narrations. Despite its centrality, however, siyāq has not received a systematic technical definition, and its conceptual boundaries remain unclear, often treated as self-evident. This study adopts a descriptive–analytical approach to clarify the concept of siyāq and to establish a more precise and methodologically grounded definition. Through a systematic review of juristic, legal-theoretical, and exegetical sources, four principal approaches to siyāq are identified: (1) its equivalence to contextual indicators (qarāʾin); (2) its interpretation as implicative indication and rational concomitants; (3) its understanding as the governing discursive atmosphere; and (4) its treatment as a fluid and indeterminate concept. Building on a comparative analysis of these approaches, the study proposes a five-level model that conceptualizes siyāq across micro-linguistic, macro-textual, intertextual, situational-historical, and purposive (maqāṣidī) dimensions. The findings demonstrate that siyāq is neither reducible to isolated textual indicators nor purely intuitive; rather, it is a dynamic and composite interpretive mechanism. When systematically applied, it enables rigorous textual understanding, whereas its unregulated use may result in interpretive fallacies and the imposition of meaning.
